FAQs
What is filet crochet?
Filet crochet is a type of crochet in which a pattern is made by crocheting open and solid squares on a mesh background. The solid blocks are double crochet stitches, and the open blocks are chain spaces.
What stitches are used in filet crochet?
Filet crochet uses double crochet stitches and chain stitches. If your blocks are more rectangular than square, lengthening the stitch height by using an extended double crochet can fix the problem.
How do you read a filet crochet chart?
Filet crochet charts use symbols to represent solid and open blocks in the mesh fabric.
Typically, a solid block is represented by a filled-in square, while an empty square represents an open block.
Solid blocks are filled with double crochet stitches, and open blocks are chain spaces. Each pattern will tell you how many stitches or chains to use for the different blocks.
The charts are read from bottom to top. Right-handers should read the odd-numbered rows from right to left, and the even-numbered rows from left to right. Left-handers should do the opposite
To be sure you’re following the chart correctly, count the number of solid and open blocks in each row as you work. If the pattern repeats, you may be able to skip counting after a few rows; or work by copying the previous row.
Is filet crochet hard?
The difficulty of filet crochet depends on the complexity of the pattern. Filet crochet uses basic, easy crochet stitches. The key to success is to keep track of the chart/pattern and count your stitches and blocks as you go.
